How to De-Ice Your Windshield

De-icing your windshield on a cold morning is one of the worst things about winter.

We all wish the windshield would de-ice and de-fog faster so we could get going on the road. Fortunately, there are ways to speed up the process.

  1. The first way requires you to think ahead. You’d need to cover your windshield in advance using a towel, bed sheet, cardboard or tarp. Then in the morning you’d just remove it before defrosting your car further, if necessary.
  2. The second is one that most of us do already, but with a twist. Defrost your car on the  highest defroster setting and hottest temperature setting. But then also turn on the air conditioner, turn off the recirculate setting and crack your windows.
  3. The last way is to make a homemade de-icer solution, or buy a de-icer solution from a store. If you want to try making your own, it’s as easy as just mixing together a solution that is one-third water and two-thirds isopropyl or rubbing alcohol. Put the solution in a spray bottle and spray the mixture on your windshield and the ice will start melting immediately. Let it sit for a minute, then use your scraper to wipe off the ice. Remember, to keep your de-icer solution somewhere that is room temp. Do not leave in your vehicle.

And one more tip… NEVER, try to melt the ice with hot water, even if you’re in a hurry. You could end up cracking your windshield.
