7 Family-Friendly Activities for Winter in Madison
Winter in Madison
During the cold, dark Wisconsin winter months, it can be extra difficult to find fun things to do as a family out of the house. While cookie baking and home movie nights are always a great idea, sometimes it’s nice to get out and about as well. Here’s a list of some of the fun things winter in Madison has to offer, despite the cold!
Things to Do
Nestled near the shore of Lake Mendota and with a gorgeous view of the capitol, the Edgewater ice rink is a wonderful place to spend a winter afternoon. There are skates that can be rented right there as well as food and drink options when it’s time to take a break to warm up.
If we get enough snow this winter in Madison, taking the kids to Elver Park for an afternoon of sledding is a fantastic idea! Sleds are cheap to pick up from most stores such as Walmart or Target, and access to the park itself is free. Your kids (and you) will have a blast with this giant hill! If Elver isn’t your style, the City of Madison has a list of nine sledding hills in the city, you could check them all off your list!
You can escape the cold and still get out of the house with a day at the children’s museum. Admission is $7.95 for both adults and children and the museum is open Tuesday through Sunday.
While the holidays have come and gone, the Season of Giving should remain all winter long! There are local nonprofits such as The River Food Pantry and Second Harvest Foodbank that are always looking for volunteers! Often times, they can find work for many ages. Your family might have to be a bit older to participate, but volunteering together is a great way to grow closer and help learn the importance of giving back at an early age. Winter in Madison can be brutal for people who don’t have homes, income or food reliability, and it’s always good to lend a helping hand.
5. On Wisconsin!
There’s nothing more thrilling than the spirit of a high stakes UW sporting event! Take your family to cheer on the Badgers basketball or hockey this winter! The schedules are listed below:
6. Burn some energy at KEVA
KEVA is an indoor sports center in Middleton with lots of space to run around and burn some energy. Indoor basketball, volleyball and soccer available! Learn more here.
On January 19 and 20, fishing is free anywhere in Wisconsin without a license. If you have the supplies but haven’t had an opportunity to get out yet, now is the perfect opportunity! Take a thermos of hot cocoa and plenty of blankets.
If you’re an adventurous family, and you knock off this entire list, you can always come in to test drive a few Hondas! We have plenty of toys and spaces for your kids to play while you chat with our salespeople. Winter in Madison doesn’t have to be a downer, but it requires a little extra push to get all bundled up and out the door. Once you make the effort, you and your family will be glad you did! Have fun this January!
